ALUMNI NEWS

Jason Behr '92 has girls' hearts throbbing at RHS! Behr stars in a new sci-fi series about young aliens living in Rosewell, NM, KMWB, Channel 23. Behr commented on his starring role: "Overnight success is usually 10 years coming." Previous stints included six episodes of "Dawson’s Creek" and singing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" on a WCCO holiday spot when he was six! Maybe we can get him to perform at the Summer Cabaret some time. . .

WCCO seems to love Richfield! Cindy Hilger '76, is a co-anchor of WCCO TV’s morning show; Al Malmberg ’69, started at WCCO radio in the early morning, but is now "Al in the Afternoon" from 3-6 PM; and Patty Peterson '73, closes out the day with WCCO radio’s "Good Night Club" from 9-12 PM. Tune in!

Nate Winkel '96, has just been drafted by the Minnesota Thunder Soccer Team. Winkel is a senior at Marquette University in Milwaukee and hopes to graduate early with a business major so he can join the team in May.

RPS FUND EXPANDS

SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES

The Richfield Public Schools (RPS) Dedicated Fund was established in 1997 as part of the Richfield Foundation. Currently, the Committee overseeing the Fund consists of twelve people, including seven graduates of Richfield High School. The objective of the Fund is to provide support for Richfield educational programs and activities that might otherwise go without funding. Programs and activities supported by RPS Fund grants to date include:

  • Centennial Elementary - Family math night
  • Sheridan Hills Elementary - Peacemakers conflict resolution program and Woodlake Nature Center field trips
  • Richfield Intermediate School - Musical instruments, gifted program, and take home books and language games for English as a Second Language
  • Richfield Middle School - Family language arts night, a simulated investing experience called the Stock Market Game, and a writer-in-the-school program
  • Richfield High School - After school theatre arts program called Theatre at Three, plus additional support for the fine arts program

You Can Help!

The RPS Fund Committee aims to positively impact the educational experience of more Richfield students in more ways by expanding the number of grants awarded. In order to do that, we need the help of current parents of Richfield students and all of Richfield’s alumni. There are several ways you can help:

  • If this is your reunion year, consider a monetary donation corresponding to the number of years since you graduated (i.e. $10 for 10th reunion, etc.).
  • When you give to the United Way, designate a portion of your donation to the Richfield Foundation / RPS Fund.
  • If you shop at Lyndale Garden Center in Richfield, place your sales receipt in the "Helping Students Blossom" box at the checkout counter. Periodically, the sales slips are totaled and 1% of the total is donated to the RPS Fund.
  • Patronize and acknowledge the contributions of major corporate donors, including Richfield Bank, Richfield/Bloomington Credit Union, and Lyndale Garden Center.

Send your tax deductible contribution to:
Richfield Foundation / RPS Dedicated Fund,
P.O. Box 23462, Richfield, MN 55423.

Please feel free to contact us if you have questions. Thanks for your support!

RHS SPORTS

Exciting competition - With a Grade 9-12 high school enrollment of about 1350, RHS moved from the Classic Lake to the Missota Conference, which includes schools of more comparable size. The move has generated greater participation, enthusiasm, and competitiveness. The girls hockey team went 20-4, earning the Missota Conference championship. Although they lost to a tough Burnsville team in the second round of playoffs, the Spartan girls should be tough next year losing only one senior. The girls basketball team is also doing well and is currently ranked #9 in the state.

New conference being planned - The biggest complaint about the Missota Conference is the travel distance to rural locations like Hutchinson, Red Wing, New Prague, and Northfield. Recently, the St. Paul Suburban Conference announced that it is dissolving, and Richfield has been invited to join a new conference consisting of South St. Paul, West St. Paul (Henry Sibley HS.), Inver Grove Heights (Simley HS), North St. Paul (No. St. Paul and Tartan HS), Mahtomedi, and St. Thomas Academy. The conference will include both athletics and fine arts activities, and will become operational in 2001-2002. Participation in the new conference will still be with schools of comparable size, but with about half the travel. There will also be a good junior high/middle school conference. The school board approved the move with strong support from students, parents, coaches and activity supervisors, and interested community members.

Look for more sports, including the RHS All-time greats in Football and Basketball, in the next issue.
