RHS SPORTS Exciting competition - With a Grade 9-12 high school enrollment of about 1350, RHS moved from the Classic Lake to the Missota Conference, which includes schools of more comparable size. The move has generated greater participation, enthusiasm, and competitiveness. The girls hockey team went 20-4, earning the Missota Conference championship. Although they lost to a tough Burnsville team in the second round of playoffs, the Spartan girls should be tough next year losing only one senior. The girls basketball team is also doing well and is currently ranked #9 in the state. New conference being planned - The biggest complaint about the Missota Conference is the travel distance to rural locations like Hutchinson, Red Wing, New Prague, and Northfield. Recently, the St. Paul Suburban Conference announced that it is dissolving, and Richfield has been invited to join a new conference consisting of South St. Paul, West St. Paul (Henry Sibley HS.), Inver Grove Heights (Simley HS), North St. Paul (No. St. Paul and Tartan HS), Mahtomedi, and St. Thomas Academy. The conference will include both athletics and fine arts activities, and will become operational in 2001-2002. Participation in the new conference will still be with schools of comparable size, but with about half the travel. There will also be a good junior high/middle school conference. The school board approved the move with strong support from students, parents, coaches and activity supervisors, and interested community members. Look for more sports, including the RHS All-time greats in Football and Basketball, in the next issue. |
