SUMMER CABARET PLANNED FOR AUGUST 8th

Were you in RHS musicals, choir or band? Do you still like to perform, either singly or as part of a group? If so, why not perform in the SUMMER CABARET, a musical variety show featuring current RHS students and alumni. Scheduled for Thursday, August 8, 7:30 P.M., in the RHS auditorium, the cabaret is a benefit for the Richfield Foundation / RPS Fund. We're hopeful that year's show will fea-ture RHS graduate John Command who had a successful Broadway career before returning to the Twin Cities area where he currently serves as director of the Bloomington Civic Theatre and is in-volved in a variety of other projects involving theatre and dance. If you aren't on stage, be sure you're in the audience! Tickets can be purchased at the door - $10 adults, $7 senior citizens, $5 students (high school age or younger).

NEED MORE INFO?  Contact Mary Keepers at 612-798-6247 by August 2.

BLACKBOARD FOLLIES PLANNED FOR THIS FALL!

Some alumni may remember attending the Blackboard Follies, a variety show featuring current and retired Richfield Public Schools staff and board of education members. This fall, the Blackboard Follies will return as a benefit for the Richfield Foundation / RPS Fund. RHS instrumental music teacher Colleen Fischer promises to line up some great acts! Look for more details in the Richfield Sun Current or on the school district web site.

ALUMNI NEWS

John Groen '96 Keynotes Academic Recognition Program
1996 graduate John Groen inspired students, staff, and parents at the May 13 Academic Recognition Program in a speech that was itself inspired by the Tom Petty song, "Running Down Your Dreams." Groen congratulated the award recipients for "succeeding in everything that has been placed in front of you at RHS." The challenge, he said, is that "after graduation, you choose what's in front of you. In college and beyond, there will be many more opportunities for involvement and success, but you must seek them out." He urged students, "Think. What do you want to be your ideal self? Who and what do you want to become?" He observed, "Every career is an opportunity. Every past time is a possibility. Think about your priorities for work and life, and make them happen." John graduated from Iowa State University and is currently on the staff at the Minnesota House of Representatives.

SUN CURRENT COLUMNIST RECALLS RHS SPORTS LEADERS

Following is a reprint of a column by John Sherman, Sun Current Sports Editor, reflecting on RHS sports leaders over the past several years. Perhaps someone from your class is listed!

Best Richfield High sports leaders put their teams first
Whenever I cover a high school sports event for Sun Newspapers, I notice star players, role players and especially, team leaders.
The great sports tradition of Richfield High School is the result of another tradition - great leadership.
A captain's contributions to a team can take many shapes and forms. Some are vocal leaders. Others are quiet leaders who radiate confidence.
The best leaders step up when the going gets tough. They settle their team's emotions and they make big plays at the end of a contest.
Furthermore, the best leaders have the right values - they are sportsmanlike, they obey the rules and they carry themselves like winners. They don't whine to referees or get involved with trash talking.
The very best leaders always put the team before themselves. They are the ultimate team players.
I'd like to recognize some of the best leaders I have observed in almost 30 years of reporting. This is by no means a complete list. But these are certainly some of the best. And, shortly, I'll tell you why.
The list does not include some of the great leaders who played in Richfield prior to 1972, my first year with the paper. Thus, you won't read my comments on such great leaders as Bill Davis, Bob Sadek, Josh Strub, Denny Gengtson, Al Andreotti, Kip Myre, Jon Nicholson, Doug Kingsriter, Al Payne and Chuck Visocil.
Here is my list of great leaders:
Patrick Akpeatte: As one of four captains on the 2001 Richfield High football team, Akpeatte came to practice each day
. with an incredible work ethic. His character was unmatched and his sportsmanship was first-rate in all instances. Patrick is also a first-rate wrestler and a state triple-jump champion on track and field.
Brian Ammann: Now the head men's basketball coach at Augsburg College in Minneapo-lis, Ammann was a great leader as an athlete at Richfield High. When he graduated as the all-time leading basketball scorer in school history, he was recognized as a finalist for the Mr. Basketball Award. Ammann seemed to love pressure situations. Maybe that's why he is such a great coach in the MIAC.
Steve Bender: The versatile all-around athlete led Richfield to back-to-back second-place state basketball finishes in the early 1970s Not only that, he was one of the best football players on the Spartan team. He continues in a leadership capacity as head boys basketball coach at Rosemount High School.
Rick Budde: The Richfield football stand out led the Spartan defense the same way Dick Butkus led the Chicago Bears. When the game got physical, Budde was the hardest hitter on the field. No one knocked him down, but he usually left a trail of bodies.
Meredith Davis: Currently a track and field All-American at Morningside College in Iowa, Davis was a tremendous leader at Richfield High. Her strong, con-sistent play in girls soccer was noticed, but her main contribution was her ability to perform in big track and field meets. She was always looking for ways to improve.
Ryan Davis: As Richfield's football and basketball captain in the mid -1990s, Davis was the best player on his teams and also
. the most unselfish player. His toughness and leadership as a football quarterback carried the Spartans to the state playoffs.
Beth and Katie Freeman: The Richfield twins¸ who graduated in 2001, set high standards on and off the court. Both were ranked in the top 10 academically in their graduating class. They captained the volleyball, basketball and track and field teams. Both Freemans were natural leaders. They showed the right values at all times and played their sports the right way. Both are competing at Carleton College in Northfield.
Darby Hendrickson: The current Minnesota Wild hockey star was a brilliant leader at Richfield. He was the cornerstone of the Spartan program. His love of the game was transferred to every teammate.
Shareen Luze: The Richfield star was a captain in volleyball, basketball and softball in the early 1990s. She gave the Spartans a competitive edge. She was always quick to give credit to her teammates for doing a good job.
Scott Schuveiller: Richfield was one of the biggest schools in the state when Schuveiller came along in the mid-1970s, but that didn't stop him from starring in baseball and football in his sophomore year. He went on to be a great leader by example. He practiced hard and competed even harder.
J.D.Walker: As the ultimate competitor, Walker was a warrior for the Richfield High football team. In baseball, he had so many clutch hits, you couldn't count them. He came to practice each day with a work ethic that said he as 100 percent serious about winning.

AcademicsACADEMICS, ACTIVITIES and SPORTS

RHS seniors Colleen Windler and Andrew Nguyen were named semi-finalists, and five additional students were named commended scholars in the 47th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. One of the commended scholars was Mercedes Burns, who also received a National Achievement Scholarship, a national scholarship competition for African American students.

Music32 members of the RHS Symphonic Winds were selected to perform at the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) convention, serving as the "demonstration band" for composer Bruce Pearson. Band Director Colleen Fischer states, "It was a very big honor to be asked to perform at this event."

After two years in the Missota Conference, Richfield became part of the newly formed Classic Suburban Conference this fall, consisting of South St. Paul, West St. Paul (Sibley HS.), Inver Grove Heights (Simley HS), North St. Paul (No. St. Paul and Tartan HS), Mahtomedi, Hill Murray HS, and St. Thomas Academy. The conference includes both athletics and fine arts activities. The change has received widespread support.

Other sports news includes the following:
Sports
  • The Girls' Soccer Team and the Boys Football Teams were Section Runners-up.

  • RHS senior Joe Aradondo represented Richfield in the State Wresting Tournament.

  • Both the Boys' and Girls' Swimming Teams and the Girls' Synchronized Swimming Team had a number of swimmers advance to the State Tournament. The Girls' Synchro Team placed 3rd at Sectionals and 6th place in the State.

  • RHS sophomore Stuart Lindgren (son of Steve Lindgren ' 67) advanced to the State Golf Tournament.

  • The Boys' Track and Field Team placed 3rd at Sectionals and 3rd place in the Conference. Seniors Pat Akpaette (triple jump and long jump), Mike Johnson (discus), and Jeff Dowell (200 and 400 meters) advanced to the State Tournament.

  • The softball team placed 5th in Section 6AAA and 2nd in the conference.

  • RHS held a special reception to honor senior Josefin Pettersson, a Swedish citizen who skated on the Swedish women's hockey team in the 2002 Olympics, earning a bronze medal. Josefin's biggest thrill was having an assist in Sweden's win against Russia!

BUDGET CUTBACKS

Like many metro area districts, Richfield Schools lost a referendum last fall and is implementing significant budget cutbacks next year. The Fiscal Planning Advisory Committee, made up largely of parents and citizens, will be submitting a report to the Board of Education recommending that the Board of Education seek voter approval of an operating levy to support the educational program and a separate "down payment levy," which would be used to update and upgrade the district's technology to better support teaching, learning, and management of the schools.

RPS FUND EXPANDS SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES

The RPS Fund was created in 1997 by the Richfield Foundation to support programs, services and activities within the Richfield Public Schools. Since then, over $15,000 in mini-grants have been awarded to support a variety of educational enrichment activities within the schools. These activities include: a writer in residence program, a Marching Spartans workshop, field trips to Wood Lake Nature Center, ESL educational games and books, the RHS Theatre @ Three program, scholarship assistance for Community Education classes, and much more!

You Can Help!

The RPS Fund Committee aims to positively impact the educational experience of more Richfield students in more ways by expanding the number of grants awarded. In order to do that, we need the help of parents of current Richfield students and Richfield alumni. There are several ways you can help:
  • If this is a reunion year for you, consider a monetary donation corresponding to the number of years since you graduated (i.e. $10 for your 10th reunion, etc.). You may want to give your donation in the form of a Spartan Gold Helmet Award to honor a favorite Richfield employee (See separate article).
  • When you give to the United Way, designate a portion of your donation to the Richfield Foundation / RPS Fund.
  • Send your tax-deductible contribution directly to: Richfield Foundation / RPS Dedicated Fund, P.O. Box 23462, Richfield, MN 55423.
  • Volunteer to serve on the RPS Fund Committee or help out with some of our activities. We have a lot of fun and it's rewarding to help our schools!
Please feel free to contact us if you have questions. Thanks for your support!
